退職年齢と社会保障
人々が働くのをやめ、多くの場合年金を受給し始める年齢を指して退職年齢といいます。1935年の社会保障法は労働者が社会保障退職年金を受給し始めることが出来る年齢を65歳に設定しました。現在の受給資格年齢の最低は62歳となっています。社会保障退職年金は「退職者」に労働市場から去ることを義務づけていないので、多くの労働者は本職を退いた後にまた新たな職を探します。こうした場合、新しい職場で働きながら同時に政府から退職手当を受給することができますが、退職手当は減額となります。 多くの労働者は退職後の収入源としては、政府による退職後手当のほかにも、企業年金や個人退職年金勘定(IRA)と呼ばれる保障制度があります。こうした制度においては、労働者が退職後生活してゆく収入を保障するために、労働者と雇用主の双方が毎月決められた額を労働者の退職年金積み立て口座に拠出します。
