Employment of Persons with Disabilities
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, a person with a disability is defined as someone “who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities…” Major life activities are those activities that an average person can easily do, such as breathing, seeing, hearing, walking, working, and learning. The ADA requires employers to make “reasonable accommodations” for persons with disabilities. This might mean that the employer needs to make his or her facility easily accessible to an employee with a disability. It might also mean that an employer has to customize a work schedule or modify equipment or work devices to accommodate a disabled worker. However, an employer is not required to lower production standards to meet the needs of a disabled worker.
