失業保険
アメリカの企業は、経営状態がよくないときには労働者を雇いつづける義務はないと考えます。労働者は経営状態がよくなるまで一時解雇されることになります。この場合、労働者は解雇されないものの、会社が労働者を呼び戻すだけの経済的余裕をとりもどすまで、仕事が出来ず、給料ももらえない状態になります。そこで、雇用期間中、雇用主と労働者の双方が毎月小額の税金を政府の基金に振り込み、労働者が一時解雇された場合、この基金からお金を受け取ることが出来る仕組みが作られています。一時解雇された労働者が暮らしていけるだけの金額を支給するため、政府もこの基金に補助を出しています。アメリカの失業保険制度は、ニューディール政策の一部として1935年に始まりました。制度の主な目的は、一時解雇された労働者の補助です。第二の目的として、解雇された労働者に食費や住居費を支給することにより、経済活動をとどこおらせないようにし、さらなる失業を防ぐことがあげられます。
